Camps and Classes – Spring 2012
Update February 6
The classes are now closed for the semester. However, this page remains so you can read about the current activities of HYT!
The poetry class is closed, but there is still limited room in the Story Theatre (ages 8-11, meets on Saturdays), Original Scriptwriting (ages 11-14, meets on Saturdays), and College-prep Acting for Middle and High School Students (ages 13-18, meets on Sundays). If you are interested, please contact Cassie Guion by Friday, January 27 at cmguion@gmail.com.
Do you like to find stories and read stories and tell stories? Then Horizon has an opportunity for you! This semester, Horizon Youth Theatre is offering a series of theatre classes taught by Cassie Guion and Katie Grilliot for students ages six to eighteen. The classes will meet once a week (except April 7-8) and culminate in a weekend of performances in May!
Poetry in Theatre: (ages 6-8)
This class is geared toward younger students who are just starting to get interested in theater. It combines poetry with movement and acting by molding well-known children’s poems into mini-plays. This class is fun, engaging, and a perfect beginning class for new theater students.
Story Theatre: (ages 8-11)
This class looks at children’s and young adult literature, as well as fables, folktales, legends, and myths, and explores how to bring a well-known story to life on the stage. Children learn about storytelling techniques through a wide range of classic and modern literature.
Original Scriptwriting: (ages 11-14)
This class allows students to create an original character to play onstage. Each student creates and develops his or her own, imaginative character; the class develops a story around the characters and performs the story as an original play.
Acting Fundamentals: (ages 13-18)
This class prepares students for auditions and stage acting. The focus is on characterization exercises, which are often not taught until the college level. Acting theorists’ exercises help prepare students for any role. Students also perform short plays, both serious and comical, to apply their new-found skills through a variety of characters and roles.
Requirements:
- The minimum age for the poetry class is at least six years of age by January 31. 2012. If your student is interested in one of the other classes, but is outside the age range for that class, please contact Cassie Guion at cmguion@gmail.com to talk about a possible exception.
- These classes are effectively rehearsals for a show, so class attendance is essential. A limited number of schedule conflicts may be permitted, with prior approval, for each student.
- Students must be available for the entire class period, which will meet for two hours on either a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The schedule is created after the sign-ups in an effort to maximize the number of students who can participate.
- Students must be available May 4-6 for the performances.
Come to the UNaudition to sign up!
What? An UNaudition! No, you do not have to get onstage and sing Twinkle, Twinkle! The UNaudition is purely for you to sign up and be placed in the class that works best with your age and schedule.
When? The sign-ups take place Monday, January 23, and Tuesday, January 24, from 4:30-6 p.m. You need not attend the whole time; Cassie and Katie will see students in brief increments, so come when it is most convenient for you!
Where? St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 315 South College St.
How much? The participation fee is $60 for each class.
Why? Because you want to learn about theatre in all its aspects, and because it will be fun!
If you have any questions, please contact Cassie Guion at cmguion@gmail.com, and we hope to see you on the 23rd or 24th!
